Catholic in Ende at The Portuguese Era
Catholicism in Flores was brought by the
Portuguese with the aim of spreading religion and as a trading base. The
mission of spreading Catholicism in Flores began with the construction of the
Lohayong Fort in 1555-1603.
Here are
some of the important events in the history of the spread of Catholicism in
Flores :
- In 1556, Father Antonio de Tavaeiro was sent to Larantuka to begin a mission to spread the religion.
- In 1561, the Bishop of Malacca sent four Dominican missionaries to spread Catholicism.
- In 1641, the Dutch conquered Malacca, which caused many Portuguese residents to migrate to Flores.
- In 1665, King Ola Adobala was baptized under the name Don Francisco Ola Adobala Diaz Vieira de Godinho. After that, every king who ruled in Larantuka had to be baptized with a Catholic name and use the surname "Diaz Viera de Godinho".
- The Kingdom of Larantuka located in Flores, East Nusa Tenggara, became one of the first and last Christian kingdoms in Indonesia.
